In a recent interview with Tatame.com , Anderson Silva stated that he has no plans to fight inside the octagon again until the end of 2013.
He did confirm that he would be cageside this weekend at UFC 154, but stated that he would not call out Georges St.Pierre.
So what does the current champ have planned for the next year? Silva states in the interview that he is opening a new gym, staring in a Steven Segal movie, and spending more time making his family a priority.
While all these are worthwhile endeavours, many fans are wondering what this does to the middleweight division. The lack of a chance of witnessing a title fight, let alone involving one of the greatest pound for pound fighters, doesn’t get too many people excited about the weight class overall. Maybe it’s time for an interim champ, although that seems hard to swallow considering Silva is not injured and voluntarily taking the time off.
On a side note, Silva still has two fights left on his UFC contract, and this is not the first time we’ve heard Silva say he’s going on vacation. The inner conspiracy theorist in me is wondering if this is some brilliant plan to make Dana White and Joe Silva scramble to make a superfight of some degree that would be a ppv monster, and fill Silva’s already heavy pockets.
